Insurance for a Residence Card—What Are the Requirements?

When evaluating insurance for a residence permit case, it’s best to base your assessment on the policy documents rather than the product name alone. Before purchasing, check what coverage is described in the current General Insurance Terms and Conditions (GITC), where the policy is valid, when coverage begins and ends, and what information will appear on the insurance document. The specific terms and conditions depend on the particular product and version of the GITC.

Important

The General Terms and Conditions describe the insurance contract. They do not replace the information regarding your specific residency status.

Where to Start When Reviewing a Policy

First, determine the dates of your planned stay, the location where coverage will apply, and the document you will receive upon signing the contract. Next, read the General Terms and Conditions for the specific product. Do not apply the terms from another policy or a previous application to your own situation.

You'll find helpful information on how to prepare documents in the guide Health Insurance and Temporary Residence. In the case of a temporary residence and work permit, official information from the Green Line indicates that applicants must have health insurance or proof of coverage for medical expenses in Poland. This information pertains to the specific type of application and is not an automatic response for every case. Check the Green Line information.

Insurance Document and Information

In the TUZ 2026 General Terms and Conditions, the application includes, among other things, the period, scope, details of the insured person, the sum insured, and the purpose of the stay. The conclusion of the contract is confirmed by an insurance certificate, and the standard term is 12 months, unless otherwise agreed. This is a description of a specific product, not a universal rule applicable to all policies.

  • Compare the first and last name with the identification document.
  • Check the start and end dates of coverage.
  • Verify the coverage area, the sum insured, and the confirmed coverage extensions.
  • Download the insurance policy and the current General Terms and Conditions of Insurance.

Scope of Coverage, Limits, and Exclusions

The scope depends on the product, the sum insured, the limits, and the exclusions. The Compensa Cudzoziemiec 2026 General Terms and Conditions cover medical expenses in Poland resulting from a sudden illness or accident, including necessary costs for hospitalization, surgery, and medical transport. Specific benefits are subject to the other provisions of this document.

These same General Terms and Conditions specify, among other things, an exclusion for elective medical treatment intended to result in a stay in Poland, as well as for treatment that exceeds the scope necessary to restore the insured’s condition to a state that allows for a return to their country of permanent residence. Do not assume that identical exclusions are included in every policy.

Check the General Terms and Conditions

Emergency medical care, transportation, limits, and exclusions may be described differently for each product and plan option.

You can read more about the nature of this protection in the article Health Insurance for Foreigners. This general description does not replace the General Terms and Conditions of the selected policy.

Period and Scope of Protection

The coverage dates should correspond to your actual plans and the information regarding your case. Under the Compensa Cudzoziemiec 2026 General Terms and Conditions, the contract may be concluded for one year or a shorter period, and coverage ceases upon obtaining permanent residence in Poland. The TUZ 2026 General Terms and Conditions specify 12 months, unless the parties agree otherwise.

Pre-submission Review

Before submitting the documents, open the policy and the current General Terms and Conditions. Verify that the details, dates, coverage area, scope, coverage amounts, and confirmed extensions are correct. Write down the policy number and the contact information for policy administration.

Do not treat the historical amount from another plan option as the current requirement. The 2016 ERGO General Terms and Conditions specified €30,000 for the STANDARD plan and €50,000 for the OPTIMUM plan, but the document does not confirm the current availability of the product or the requirement in the proceedings.
